They're Repeating across America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president started showing the public his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and this week a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense of him since they are atheists or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for others, particularly for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you should give them your pullover too.

The obvious and direct reality that Christ from scripture requests a type of profound affection focused on the needy is what has always made Christianity something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and calls to the best parts in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or reject?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by reference to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to what makes it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it suggest pretending the worst regarding America and Christianity never occurred; it means both modesty and conviction, a blend that serious American Christians should embrace.
