Cyclone Melissa is forecast to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 hurricane as it shifts towards Jamaica, causing life-threatening flash flooding and landslides.

The cyclone, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to reach land by Tuesday, according to meteorological authorities.

Advisories of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been issued as this storm generates up to 30 inches of rainfall and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been told.

The cyclone is the 13th storm in the current Atlantic season, which usually concludes in late autumn.

Highest-Level Storm Risk

A category five storm is the strongest type, with wind speeds of at least 157 miles per hour.

While Melissa is set to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 hurricane before arriving at Jamaica, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the overall impacts" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "at least that intensity" when it impacts the country.

With storm-force winds and rain predicted to begin ahead of it passes over the island's interior - perhaps encompassing the capital, Kingston - advisories indicate that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and intense precipitation have begun and will cause severe and deadly rapid water accumulation and many rock slides," urged meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister the statesman stated: "I know that there are numerous residents who are anxious, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: concern is justified.

"However the optimal approach to handle worry and any nervousness and anxiety is to remain prepared."

Locals are being instructed to secure their homes with protective bags and plywood sheets, and to stock up on necessary supplies.

Warnings are also active for parts of Haiti encompassing the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where the hurricane is projected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.

Mudslides currently triggered by the cyclone have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Melissa is forecast to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Caribbean archipelago and entering the Atlantic.
